A person with greatest kindness is like water,

the merit of which is to moisturize all the things

but never ever compete with them.

Water even stays at a place where other people dislike,

therefore water stays closest to " Dao".

A person like water chooses his position,

keeps his heart secluded and unfathomable,

communicates with others kindly,

and keeps his promises.

If he governs, he is skilled in governing,

dealing things tactfully, using his talents well, and catching his opportunities.

Because of such great personalities,

he doesn’t have any faults at all.

原文： 上善若水。水善利。万物而不争。处众人之所恶，故几于道。居善地，心善渊，与善仁，言善信，政善治，事善能，动善时。

夫唯不争，故无尤。

白话文：达到最大善的人就像水一样。水之善能滋润万物， 但从不与万物相争。 水甚至会处于众人皆厌恶的境地（低下之处），所以它和道几乎相同。达到最大善的人会像水一样，他们作事会按以下方法：

善于选择处所，

善于将自己的心胸保持幽静、且深不可测

善于以仁待人

善于遵守自己的信诺

善于治理、从政，

善于发挥自己的特长

善于抓住时机行动

正因为如此，这类人不会与人争，所以没有过失。

日本語：最善者が水如し、水の良さが‘すべてのものを濡れるけれどもすべてのものと絶対に争いません。皆様の大嫌い所さえでもあたりたがる、殆ど道と同じである。最善者が’水如し以下の技能通りです。

所の選別すること

自分の心を深く静かに埋めること

仁で付き合うこと

自分の信用を守ること

政治をうまく行うこと

自分の利点をうまく行くこと

機会をつかすこと

だからこそこのような者がいつまでも他人と争うので誤りがないものである。
